Applied Research

We organise, design and conduct a number of applied long-term research programs relating to the coastal and marine environment in Arabia and elsewhere. Over the years this has lead to the acquisition of a large body of pertinent scientific literature and innumerable links with local and international researchers providing an essential resource on which we draw for specialist advice and background information.

The results of our research are presented at international workshops, conferences and symposia, and published in scientific journals including Marine Pollution Bulletin, Marine Mammal Research, Estuarine Coastal and Shelf Sciences, and Ambio. Robert Baldwin, one of Five Oceans’ senior consultants, has recently published two books with marine and coastal themes: ’Marine Life of Arabian Seas’ and ‘Whales and Dolphins of Arabia’.

Information is also used in the development of public awareness, educational and popular material. We provide information based on our applied research to governments and international bodies such as PERSGA, ROPME, IUCN, WWF, IWC, ICRI, as well as a number of academic institutions.

In addition to our scientific writing we have produced numerous books and booklets on Arabian marine life for more a more general readership. Amongst these are public information booklets on corals, turtles and dolphins as well as two educational interactive CD-ROMs, one regarding the marine environment and another about the Arabian Oryx Sanctuary. All of these have been published in Arabic and English.
